Invitation for Active Participation at PCE 2006

Dear Colleagues from all over the world,
dear person-centered practitioners, trainers and researchers,
dear students and others who take an active interest in the contribution of PCE psychotherapy and counseling to the understanding and fostering of health!

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to participate at and actively contribute to the 7th World Conference on Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counseling, which will be held in Germany, July 12–16, 2006.

We have succeeded in arranging a very nice venue in Potsdam, the historically famous capital-city of the state Brandenburg, 20 kilometers west of Berlin. The conference center "Kongresszentrum am Templiner See, Potsdam" with the congress-hotel is situated directly on the banks of Lake Templin. You can relax quietly in the charming forest and lake landscape of the Pirschheide without being out of touch. It is only ten minutes to the centre of Potsdam and the Railway station; and it only takes roughly half an hour to reach the heart of Berlin and the international Berlin Airport Tegel, one hour to the international Berlin Airport Schönefeld (public transportation).

There will be ample opportunities for informal gatherings. If you like, you can participate in a pre-conference encounter group, which will start on Tuesday, July 11 at 9:15, and last until Wednesday, July 12 at 12:15. During the conference some reflection groups will be organized, in which participants can reflect on the conference themes, the keynote address of that day in particular, or on whatever subject they like.

Next to the keynote addresses some very interesting symposia are planned, as well as workshops on a diversity of topics. Moreover, there will be ample room for the presentation of individual papers and posters or to organize round table discussion groups. We strongly encourage you to submit proposals for active participation in whatever format.

Please notify that the deadline for the submission of conference proposals is January 15, 2006. Enclosed you will find the submission form as well as the registration forms.

We think that PCE 2006 will be an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world and exchange ideas. Therefore, we very much hope to welcome you in Potsdam.

Chair, Scientific- and Local Organizing Committee

Conference Theme:
Leading a Good Life: A PCE Perspective of Health

Introduction

Since Carl R. Rogers in 1961, much has been written about the "good life", the "fully functioning" person, health and dysfunction. Today the theme continues to inspire many questions: What evolutions have taken place in the understanding of psychological health in person-centered and experiential psychotherapy and counseling? What is specific to the PCE view that is not present in the views of other orientations? What about the intercultural, metapsychological and spiritual aspects of our theory? Can a common thread still be found in the PCE literature on these topics? How can we help clients and patients to become and be more fully functioning, using their resources, regaining strength and autonomy? How can we ourselves as therapists take care of our health?

In PCE 2006, the 7th World Conference for Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counseling, we want to reflect and discuss these questions both on an individual and societal level. Keynote presentations will address the conference theme from a variety of theoretical, cultural and professional perspectives. They will include a more general reflection on the evolution of PCE concepts of health with emphasis on new challenges, an elaboration of scientific interdisciplinary discourses on selforganization relating to the concept of actualizing tendency and a presentation of intercultural social and political aspects of PCE therapy and counseling.

Additionally an array of contributions will take place in parallel sessions. Presentations are invited which highlight a person-centered and experiential view on a variety of topics: health and leading a good life, new developments in person-centered and experiential psychotherapy and counseling, empirical research, theory development and the application of the approach in various fields of practice and institutional settings. Any form of presentation is invited: lecture, workshop, panel, poster, multi-media, etc. Topics are welcome including:

1. The "Fully Functioning" Person, Congruence, Health
2. Actualizing Tendency in Modern Interdisciplinary Systems Theory
3. Philosophy, Religion and Spirituality
4. Children, Adolescents, Parents and Families
5. The Adults, Students, Persons in Firms & Organizations
6. The Older Ones
7. Social, Intercultural and Political Aspects (Minority Groups included)
8. Clinical Practice, Including Design and Management of Clinical Settings
9. Specific Challenges in Regard to Clients with Specific Dysfunctions
10. The Therapist‘s Self-Care and Own Psychological Health
11. Operationalisations and Measures: Outcome, Process, Health
12. Other Topics Relevant to a Person-Centered and Experiential View on Life

The opening address will be given by Reinhard Tausch (Germany)
Three keynote speakers will deliver a keynote address on the conference theme:
Art Bohart (USA), Maureen O’Hara (USA) und Jürgen Kriz (Germany)
